OSLO (Reuters) – A Norwegian court found Anders Behring Breivik sane on Friday and gave him a maximum jail term for murdering 77 people in a shooting and bombing last year, offering closure to a Nordic nation devastated by its worst attack since World War Two.

Breivik, who has admitted blowing up the Oslo government headquarters with a fertilizer bomb, killing eight, before gunning down 69 at the ruling party’s summer youth camp, was sentenced to 21 years in prison, the maximum penalty in Norway.

But officials can prevent his release indefinitely and are expected to do so if the anti-Muslim right-winger still poses a threat. Breivik had rejected prosecutors’ arguments that he was mad, and had said he would appeal if he were ruled insane.

They should apply the same level of security at Movie Theater entrances as they do at airports and body scanners and pat-downs. This is insanity.

Movie-going may never be the same.

Since the days of silent and black and white films, theaters have always been a place for Americans to escape – from economic downturns, the stresses of war, and even from the heat.

But the tragic shooting at a movie theater outside Denver early Friday morning may forever change the carefree way movie fans buy buckets of popcorn and pick their seats. The shooter who opened fire on a theater packed with avid Batman fans took advantage of excitement for high-octane special effects to delay the reaction to his horrific actions.

The big questions: How will this change theater chains security protocol? (Will we see metal detectors, like at the airport?) Will theaters change their approach to midnight screenings, which usually draw the most avid fans? What about costumes? Fans attending midnight screenings, especially those for comic book superhero films, often dress inspired by characters from the movie. (Police say the suspect was wearing a bullet-proof vest, riot helmet, and was carrying a gas mask rifle, and handgun when he was arrested. Would someone with that kind of gear been apprehended sooner if no one else was wearing Batman gear?)

HONG KONG (AP) — For thousands of Hong Kongers, this weekend’s 15th anniversary of China‘s takeover of the semiautonomous territory isn’t a moment to celebrate but a chance to air grievances from corruption scandals to human rights to a widening gap between rich and poor.

Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here on Friday to install Hong Kong‘s new but already unpopular leader, whose swearing-in on Sunday’s anniversary is expected to draw large-scale protests. Hu, surrounded by tight security, is unlikely to see them.

Hollywood will keep churning garbage as always. As if they have stopped making movies about Vampires and Zombies.

It’s all a money making business.

Like the poor Earthlings whose impending doom the genre chronicles, the asteroid disaster movie could be on its last legs.

That may not be immediately apparent, since a new killer-asteroid film, “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,” opens at theaters nationwide Friday (June 22). But scientists are making so much progress finding and tracking big, dangerous space rocks that a surprise civilization-threatening impact is becoming less and less realistic.

OSLO, Norway (AP) — With a rambling monologue depicting Norway’s worst peacetime massacre as a necessary evil, confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik got the last word as his 10-week trial ended Friday amid conflicting claims about his sanity.

Relatives of his 77 victims said they hope it’s the last they hear of him.

Prosecutors on Thursday called for an insanity ruling, saying there was enough doubt about Breivik’s mental state to preclude a prison sentence.

The five-judge panel will announce its ruling on Aug. 24, chief judge Wenche Elisabeth Arntzen said.
